Scala Developer

About the role

Playtech’s GPAS unit is seeking an experienced Scala Developer to join its engineering team. You will work on high‑scale, server‑side applications that power regulated gaming platforms, contributing to design, development and continuous improvement of the core platform.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, refactor and support Scala‑based services following high‑quality standards.
• Participate in code reviews and collaborate with platform teams to deliver robust solutions.
• Optimize system performance to maximise throughput and scalability.
• Work autonomously on tasks with minimal supervision while proactively exceeding expectations.

Required profile

• Minimum 3 years of hands‑on experience building server‑side applications in Scala.
• Strong understanding of the JVM, data structures, algorithms and concurrent programming principles.
• Ability to take ownership, solve complex problems and document solutions clearly.
• Fluent English communication skills.

Required skills

• Scala (preferably Scala 3) and SBT.
• Akka/Pekko frameworks – HTTP, Actors, Cluster, Persistence, Streams and connectors.
• Experience with high‑scale distributed systems and integration patterns.
• Knowledge of Typesafe Config, Couchbase or other document‑oriented NoSQL databases.
• Familiarity with AWS services such as S3 and DynamoDB.
• Testing using ScalaTest and JSON handling with Play JSON.
• Containerisation and orchestration tools – Docker, Nomad or Kubernetes.
• Comfortable working in Linux environments.
