Senior Backend Engineer - Rules Platform

About the role

Wise is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join its Rules Platform team (Risk & Control Tooling) in Tallinn. The team builds and maintains the shared infrastructure that lets teams such as Fraud, AML and KYC create, run and manage risk assessments and controls. You will work on complex backend challenges involving distributed systems, shared engineering components, data consistency and platform reliability.

Key responsibilities

• Build and evolve the Rules Platform, developing reliable, scalable backend services and reusable internal libraries used by several engineering teams.
• Drive technical design and architecture decisions for complex distributed systems where performance, reliability and data consistency are critical.
• Improve platform performance and reliability, monitor service-level objectives (SLOs), identify bottlenecks and drive improvements.
• Work with Product Managers and engineers to understand needs, prioritise improvements and make the platform easier to use and extend.
• Take ownership of engineering initiatives, from problem identification and trade-off evaluation through to implementation and delivery.
• Contribute to technical discussions, code reviews and mentoring of other engineers.

Required profile

• Strong hands-on experience with JVM-based languages such as Java or Kotlin and building complex backend systems.
• Confidence in system design and technical decision-making, including evaluating trade-offs and proposing architectural improvements.
• A product mindset, understanding the needs of internal users and working closely with Product Managers.
• Experience mentoring engineers and contributing to engineering best practices.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across teams and explain technical decisions clearly.

Required skills

• JVM-based languages (Java or Kotlin)
• Kafka, SQL databases and distributed systems
• Building or maintaining internal libraries and shared components
• Nice to have: Spring / Spring Boot and build tooling, FinTech or risk-related systems experience, familiarity with regulated environments
