Fuel Cell Process Engineer
PowerUP Energy Technologies · Tallinn Metropolitan Area
Job description
About the role
PowerUP Energy Technologies, a hydrogen technology startup based in Estonia, is looking for a Fuel Cell Process Engineer on a full-time, hybrid basis. You will help design, develop and optimise fuel cell power systems and work with European space agency projects, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists to meet client performance, reliability and cost targets. Experience in PEMFC, hydrogen or electrolyser is beneficial.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the design, calculation and development of complete fuel cell systems or electrochemical compressors, integrating fluid components, power electronics and thermal management subsystems.
- Build fuel cell and electrochemical compressor models in tools such as Matlab/Simulink/LabVIEW to analyse performance, find bottlenecks and improve efficiency.
- Evaluate and select components (stacks, compressors, balance of plant items) from suppliers and design the architecture of complete systems.
- Design and run test plans to validate performance, durability and safety, then analyse test data and modify designs accordingly.
- Troubleshoot system-level issues arising during testing or operation.
Required profile
- Masters or PhD in Chemical, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Working knowledge of fuel cells, electrolyzers, electrochemical compressors, batteries or other electrochemical systems.
- Experience in flowchart system design and flow/thermal calculations.
- Fluent written and spoken English; willingness to relocate to Tallinn is an advantage.
Required skills
- Proficiency in MATLAB, LabVIEW or Simulink.
- Understanding of control system engineering principles and design fundamentals.
- Ability to collate data and present clear results verbally and in reports.
- Advantageous: familiarity with fuel cell controls and algorithms, and hands-on experience with PEMFC, SOFC, alkaline systems, heat exchangers and electrolyzers.
What we offer
- A chance to join a pioneering tech startup and contribute to sustainable energy technology.
- A collaborative, friendly multi-national team with opportunities for professional growth.
