Engineering Lead - Payout Core

About the role

Wise is looking for an Engineering Lead for its Payout Core team in Tallinn. Payout Core handles every outgoing payment at Wise, choosing the right partner integration, handling retries and giving delivery time estimates. The team is newly formed and the lead will set its technical direction, lead its engineers and build a product-agnostic payout platform.

Key responsibilities

• Tech lead: code quality, architecture, performance, reliability and adherence to engineering standards
• Own the payout domain's technical roadmap, including architecture evolution and smart routing
• People manager: productivity, goals, career paths, hiring and team composition
• Shape the team's ways of working as it becomes an independent unit
• Drive the payout domain vision, align stakeholders and represent the team in cross-team architectural discussions, including RFCs

Required profile

• Experience as a tech lead or engineering manager with a track record of developing engineers and building autonomous teams
• Strong product mindset, ownership, communication skills and ability to explain complex topics to non-technical audiences
• Able to own a technical vision and turn it into a roadmap
• Comfortable in ambiguity, as the team is new

Required skills

• Extensive experience with Java or Kotlin, including Spring and microservices best practices
• Relational databases, query optimization and schema design
• Nice to have: payments or financial infrastructure experience, and building highly available systems in high traffic
