Senior Backend Engineer – Contacts

About the role

You will join an autonomous team that owns the end‑to‑end recipient experience at Wise. You’ll drive the technical vision for the backend that powers how users add, find and manage their counterparties, and help scale a world‑class recipient management product.

Key responsibilities

• Define and implement the backend architecture that supports millions of bank accounts and intelligent search features.
• Scale the platform, optimise performance and ensure high availability for the Contacts service.

Required profile

• You get things done and thrive in a fast‑moving environment.
• Experience with large‑scale distributed systems.
• Strong knowledge of Java (5+).
• Hands‑on experience with relational and non‑relational databases, query optimisation and schema design.
• Product‑mindset with data‑driven decision making focused on customer pain‑points.
• Collaborative attitude and ability to bring people together to solve problems.
• Design, deploy and maintain clean RESTful APIs.
• Commitment to best coding practices, code reviews and open feedback.
• Passion for writing testable code and practising Test‑Driven Development.
