Senior Software Engineer – Screening Engine

About the role

Wise is looking for a senior software engineer to join the Screening Engine team, a critical part of our compliance and risk infrastructure. You will own end‑to‑end delivery of high‑throughput, low‑latency services that power sanctions, PEP, and adverse media screening.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate fault‑tolerant microservices using Java and Spring, from concept through deployment and post‑release monitoring.
• Collaborate with compliance, risk, and operations teams to ensure screening systems remain scalable, defensible, and meet regulatory requirements.
• Improve matching algorithms, data observability, and system reliability while balancing risk reduction and customer experience.
• Lead code reviews, mentor teammates, and contribute to the technical roadmap for screening capabilities.

• Strong product mindset – you question why features are built and make data‑driven decisions.
• Proactive ownership of projects, identifying risks early and driving them to resolution.
• Excellent collaborator who works across compliance, risk, and engineering disciplines.

Required skills

• Java with the Spring framework.
• Asynchronous messaging systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS or similar).
• RESTful API design and versioning.
• Relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and non‑relational data stores.
• Experience building production‑grade microservices and handling full service lifecycle.
